Journal Writing

The Cardinals had truly enjoyed their last Journal Writing experience that they requested we “do it again.” So, this past week we did just that. Each Cardinal found the space they felt most comfortable and peaceful. Then, the lights were dimmed, a scented candle was lit, and Yanni’s music was played in the background. As the Cardinals began crafting their best work, a snack was provided.

To help guide our journal question we read, What I Do Best! Allia Nolan and Miki Sakamoto wrote this rhyming story which features different children and highlights what makes each child special, what each does best. All have unique talents such as drawing, dancing, signing, acting, building, baking cupcakes, doing sports, taking care of household pets and even folding laundry.

After the read-aloud, we had a short discussion about how everyone has something that they are particularly good at. We posed the question, “What do you do best?” The Cardinals were then encouraged to draw themselves doing what they felt they were good at and to focus on adding details that exhibited their amazing talent. They were reminded to "think in shapes" as they drew themselves.
