Español con los Cardenales: Saludos con Luis

¡Bienvenidos familia, amigas, y amigos! During la clase de Español, it was Audrey’s turn to choose our destination to a Spanish speaking country. After singing our morning greeting song, ¡Buenos día amigos!, Audrey suggested we head to Bolivia.  Upon our arrival to this Spanish speaking country, we gathered in a círculo and began our Spanish language experience.

During our clase, we practiced words for greetings. My aim was for the children to demonstrate an understanding of Spanish words used when greeting someone as well as common and polite gestures such as a hand shake or a wave. The phrases we practiced were as follows:

¿Cómo estás? - How are you?
¡Muy bien, gracias! - Very well, thank you!
¡Asi, asi! - So,so
No muy bien, gracias. - Not very well, thank you
¡Hasta luego! - See you later!
¡Adiós! - Good-bye!

To highlight these expressions, we sang the following to the tune of “Are you Sleeping”:

Buenos días, Buenos días
¿Cómo estás?, ¿Cómo estás?
¡Yo muy bien gracias! ¡Yo muy bien gracias!
¿Y tú? ¿Y tú?

Puppets entertain and fascinate children, which enhances the learning experience. Sensory, audio and visual learners can all enjoy playing with them while improving their skills. For that reason, from time to time there will be “special friends” that will visit us during our clase de Español. On this day, to enhance the Cardenales interest and engagement, Luis stopped in and joined us.

He went around and asked in Spanish how we were doing. He asked each Cardenal, Cómo te llamas (What is your name?) and the Cardenales were encouraged to respond with, Me llamo ______ (My name is .....).  Once the children gave their names, Luis would ask them, ¿Cómo estás?

So, go ahead and give it a try! Practice at home with your child and/or children how to greet one another in Español.

We finished our class with our traditional song, Adios, hasta luego, and Audrey squeezing la vaca. ¡Gracias, Audrey!

¡Hasta nuestro proximo viaje! (Until our next voyage!)

Paz,

Alicia
