First Friday Coffees

Fridays, January 10^th, February 7^th and March 7^th from 8:00–9:00 a.m. in the Lower School

ü  Drop in for a hot beverage and a quick bite to eat, not to mention a moment to relax.

Bread & Soup Night for families with 3’s, 4’s, Kindergarten and 1^st grade students

Friday, January 24^th from 5:30-7pm in the Muller Cafeteria

ü  On this evening, families are asked to bring in breads and other items that are special to their family to make a meal along with soups provided by Home & School.  Peter Moses performs a fun sing along and parents can enjoy the company of other adults.

Parent’s Night Out

Saturdays, February 1^st, March 1^st & March 15^th at 7pm

ü  These casual gatherings of parents will be held at various locations around Montgomery County. Come to one or come to all….just depends how badly you need a night out! 

·         February 1^st – Mt Airy @ Goat Hollow

·         March 1^st – Ambler @ Forest & Main

·         March 15^th – Jenkintown @ Guild Hall Brewing Company (opening soon!)

Pizza, PJs & a Movie

Friday, March 14^th from 6:00 - 8:30 pm

ü  Join us for a pizza dinner followed by a movie in the Muller Auditorium, all while in your pjs!

MLK Day of Service 2014

Monday, January 20

Each year, Abington Friends School is honored to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by engaging in a day of service.  We will join together on Monday, January 20, 2014. The day will begin at the Meetinghouse with registration at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by noon.  We have many different service and community building opportunities planned on and off campus. Projects include: Aid for Friends meal preparation, game and activity creating for St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, cookie decorating for Face to Face and Whosoever Gospel Mission, activities at Rydal Park, and a clothing sale to benefit Women’s Center of Montgomery County. Used books of all types, especially children’s books and books in Spanish.

Winter Program

El Día y La Noche

The Day and The Night
An Abington Friends Lower School Winter Program
Friday, December 20, 2013 ~ 10:00 a.m.
Abington Friends School Muller Auditorium

~ Winter Program Concert Attire ~
All children, 3 years old through Grade 4 should dress in black shirts, long, black pants, and comfortable shoes.  Children are welcome to add a white accessory as a way to connect to our program theme (a white bowtie, white hair accessory, a white scarf, etc.)  We encourage children to be creative with this choice!  All children are encouraged to bring their concert attire clothing to school on Thursday prior to the program.  Children will be given the opportunity to change at school on Friday morning prior to the 10 a.m. performance.

Please note that all children will be involved in movement activities on stage and should wear pants and comfortable shoes (no heels please).  In addition, we ask that third and fourth graders wear black socks for their movement performances.

Luv and Subha's Visit

Family involvement is an integral part of our program here at AFS, a central component. This week we had the wonderful opportunity of having Luv and Subha, Radha’s parents, visit the Cardinals’ classroom.  They stopped by to share their special skill with us, how it is that they fill buckets every day.

Both Luv and Subha are doctors that "help fix somebody when they get a boo-boo.” They “check your heart” and “are super heroes” as stated by some of the Cardinals. Luv and Subha fist began their presentation by inviting the Cardinals to be “doctors” for the day. They presented each child with a surgeon’s hat and a surgical mask. Some friends got a surgical cap and others got the “fluffy” kind which is called a surgeon’s bouffant.

Luv specializes in Otorhinolaryngology which focuses on head and neck surgery. He works with both children and adults. Luv explained to the Cardinals that what he does first to his patients is to “look in your mouth” and “look in your ears.” He introduced the children to some of the tools that he uses and invited them to take turns at role playing either the doctor or the patient.    

First, they used an otoscope to look into the “patient’s” mouth....

Using their iPad, Luv and Subha showed us what our vocal chords look like, which is what “helps us talk”....

Next, using a model, Luv and Subha showed us what it looks like inside our ear. They informed us that the “three tiniest bones in our body are in our ear”. Radha helped out by holding the eardrum model for us to see. The eardrum is the component in our ear that helps us hear. Then, adding a specula, the Cardinals examined their patient’s ear....

Luv told us that some people are unable to hear and need a little extra help to be able to hear well. He showed us a tool that can help a person with this situation. He invited us to cover our ears and see if we could hear once this small device was held up against our forehead. Amazing! One can really hear clearly.

Another tool Luv and Subha brought out was a tuning fork. The Cardinals quickly recognize this tool as our music teacher, Aedín, had introduced them to it. One Cardinal noticed that the one Aedín uses doesn’t sound as loud as the one that Luv and Subha showed them. We realized that this same tool can be used for different things. Aedín uses it to find a musical note and Luv and Subha uses it to check hearing loss.  

What a magnificent experience! Thank you Luv, Subha and Radha for this remarkable opportunity, it was truly awesome!
