AFS Traditions

Traditions are a valuable way to strengthen our families, home as well as school. They teach us how to be part of a community and enable us to see ourselves as a valuable member of that community.  During this past week there were two exceptionally enjoyable AFS traditions that took place. One of them was Field Day.

An AFS tradition for many years, Field Day brings together our school community for a day of fun and sociable competitive events, with the emphasis on fun and sportsmanship. Starting from Kindergarten through twelve grade students are divided into the Blue Team and the White Team (our school colors) and families as well as teachers cheer along.

During our outdoor time, the Cardinals decided to venture through this fun-filled happening. We bumped into many, many friends and family members. We had a fabulous time running, singing, dancing, and cheering. But, the highlight of our experience was meeting and greeting Roo, our school’s mascot. After a photo (or two), Roo too joined us as we danced to the Field Day DJ’s tunes played by our talented Chris Buzby, our Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble Director for Middle and Upper School.

The other pleasurable AFS tradition that happened during the week was the 3rd grade and Kindergarten partners’ tradition of collaborating to create their own scarecrows. On our way to the open field for some much deserved gross motor play the Cardinals took the opportunity to stop by some of these scarecrows that are displayed on campus. Each had its own autobiography story that included its name.

What wonderful ways to build community among the families, staff and faculty at AFS!
