Exploring the Cardinal Room

Our Cardinal classroom environment is a very import component in your child's experience at school.  The children are confident and becoming more familiar with our learning centers and take pride in caring for our classroom materials and centers.  We actually have introduced a Community Job Chart where the children will begin to rotate classroom jobs and take responsibility for our classroom community.  We felt that giving you a visual tour of our classroom would be informative and would further connect you to our life at school.  Enjoy the tour and please be sure to stop in and explore our classroom first hand!

Each morning when the Cardinals enter the room, they go to the sign-in table to write their names. At this center, friends are becoming familiar with the appearance of their name and beginning to practice writing their name.

Morning Meeting
Morning Meeting is a group gathering in which we observe a Moment of Silence, stimulate thinking, and enrich social skills. It also helps friends develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.

Daily Schedule and Question of the Day
Our Daily Schedule is reviewed everyday with friends during Morning Meeting. This provides friends with an understanding as to what their day will look like. The Question of the Day familiarizes both teacher and friends based on common interests and abilities.

The Writing and Art Center
This center helps friends improve their small muscle development and hand-eye coordination. It allows friends to experiment and problem solve with a variety of writing and art materials. Also, it helps friends to creatively express their thoughts by creating pictures and dictating stories.

Art Studio
By using different types of art materials in the Art Studio, friends are able to explore color combinations and the properties of various mediums. This area also helps friends develop both fine and gross motor skills.

Math Center
When working with math manipulatives and activities, children improve small muscle development and hand-eye coordination. The  children develop one-to-one correspondence, number sense and part-whole relationships. It also allows friends to build their math vocabulary by working both independently or collectively using problem solving skills.

Sensory Table
At the Sensory Table, friends experiment with materials like sand, water and rice. This center helps improve small muscle development and hand-eye coordination through filling and dumping containers.

Block Play Center
The Block Play Center gives friends the ability to experience with shape and size discrimination, spatial relationships, balance, organization, and cause and effect. This center also allows friends to experience number skills, classification, problem solving, creativity and most of all, cooperative play.

Puzzle and Family Center
The Puzzle Center helps friends develop hand-eye coordination, problem solving and social skills. Throughout the classroom, pictures of the Cardinal Families can be found as well as their family books. This allows friends to have a little piece of home in our classroom. So if you have not brought in a picture of your family or your family books, please do so!

The Science Center
Experiences at the Science Center offer friends many hands-on opportunities for observation, collection and sorting, exploration, investigation, making predictions, experimentation and environmental stewardship.

Dramatic Play Center
Dramatic Play activities helps friends express themselves, practice life skills, develop and extend creativity, build vocabulary and use critical thinking to problem solve. This center also allows friends to improve their social skills and increase their self-esteem.

Classroom Library
Exploring literature helps friends develop an appreciation and enjoyment of reading. It enhances one's vocabulary, comprehension skills and knowledge base. It helps friends acquire the different parts of a story such as: beginning, middle, end, characters, and plot. The Literature Center gives friends an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and expands their knowledge base.

Cubbies
Each friend has his or her own cubby. This is a place where friends are able to keep extra clothes, rain boots and jackets. We are asking families to only use the AFS school bag that was provided at the beginning of the school year since there is little space. This is also a great spot for one's lovey to cozy up in until rest time. But please do not worry; as soon as lunch is over, friends will get their lovies and give them double the amount of hugs and kisses!
